You leave a gap of some 500 years, conveniently eliding the Moorish conquest of Spain, introduction of Arabic numbers, the transition from Romanesque to Gothic (or Moorish) architecture, and the invention of movable type and the printing press.

The Italian Renaissance was backward-looking (in architecture at least), preferring to emulate Classical modes, discarding the empirical methods of their predecessors.
