...so were the Nazis. Bruno Taut was a Bauhaus architect who couldn't reconcile with the 3rd Reich, went to Japan and fell in love with Katsura, the 17th c. Imperial villa. That in turn had a profound effect on the visual compositions of Modernism. Go figure.
