Ontogeny repeats phylogeny … assuming that it survives. Survival more often than not depends on sensitivity to the environment, avoiding death (which terminates reproduction for the individual, at least), the many causes of which are "random". Humans (with rare exceptions) aren't very tuned in to their environment.
