Archaeology, and history, have been notable for their tendency to canonize myths created by senior academics, whose work goes unchallenged by junior academics because to do so is a huge risk to one's own career. Consider Noam Chomsky's dominance of linguistics (for instance) and his insistence that there was a "language organ" in the brain.
